I have 2 old wheelie bins for compost. A few holes drilled in bottom and empty them out ever Xmas time. Ideal

Hello @Graemejohnson39 good idea and i'm also new myself :)
  • I have 4 wheelie bins for compost off of facebook marketplace drilled holes in the bottom and access door cut at the bottom front panel 👍
  • I use wheelie bins for:
-pernicious weeds, which will later go on the compost heap
    -chippings/shreddings
-Somewhere for the neighbours to put their garden waste, which will then become my chippings/shreddings

I think wheelie bins would be very fine as compost bins with fairly large drainage holes drilled in the bottom. The only trickiness is that you might need to stand on a box to reach in to mix it or see how it's doing.

I think you'd just need the room to tip it out for turning/using @Quartz. It's the only real drawback, although they're also quite big, so you need enough material to fill and leave it, unless you have room for a couple of them etc .  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
