Dahilia fungus storing over winter

Hi alls, having purchased some splendid Dahlias over the summer I've tried to store them in my cold frame over winter in coir, I've inspected the  Dahlias today and there is a fungus which has grown on the stem, the tubers look dry and it's just the stems affected. It also looks like Chafer grubs have made been making a meal of some of tubers. I've cut off affected tubers and soft stem and have wrapped in fleece and placed in my shed. I'm going to try storing in Sand can I also cut any root off the tubers to allow for more room?...or could I now be fighting a loosing battle.

Any thin roots coming out from the tubers can be cut off. Cut the old stems down low to get rid of the fungus.   If they have multiple stems you could probably split them. Each stem needs to have a new tuber attached to give food for new growth next spring.  Some of my older plants have split into three smaller ones which use smaller pots.  Each is now potted up in fresh compost , but left dry until spring.
  • When is the best time to replant tubers,i had Dahlias last summer for the first time. They seem ok,i wrapped them in damp newspaper.

  • Usually do not plant back out till late May or when you are sure there will be no risk of frost as the leaves are very tender.
