Imperata cylindrica (Japanese Blood Grass)

madpenguinmadpenguin Posts: 2,543
I have the grass Imperata cylindrica (Red Baron or rubra) currently growing in pots.
Would like to put directly in the ground but not sure if it would be too invasive.
The green variety is a pest in some parts of the world as it seeds around. My variety has never seeded.
Has anyone else got it growing freely in their garden,is a pest or controllabe?
Would love to hear before I go ahead and possibly create a problem!!!!

  • We grow this up here and in our old garden in Wales and have never found it invasive or a problem.
But in warmer climates it may behave differently.

I tried this in my Belgian garden but it didn't like the cold wet winters and died.    Planted some here where it's hotter and drier and I wove a ribbon of it thru a bed with plenty of light but shade from the hottest sun and it didn't like that either - drought form June to November doesn't help tho it had thrived before then in pots in full sun.

Seems to me it spreads via its roots, a bit like couch grass but not as pernicious.

Thanks all, seems a safe bet to put in the ground and see how it fares, but will keep some in a pot just in case!
