This is what I had to put on my boundary between the edge of my wood and the farmers field and classed as stock fencing It is designed to keep back smaller animals ie sheep pigs and the barbed wire deters the larger animals cows horses etc from get through and is what the woodland trust agent recommended.
If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.
As you say @Lyn you do need the right kit. I got lucky and get on well with the farmer so I supplied the materials and he supplied all the labour and kit, it was two hundred meters in all but only took them three days (professionals) and lots of tea/coffee and bacon sandwiches from me.

Very useful photo as it shows the type of stock fencing which has the smaller rectangular shapes at the bottom and larger square ones at the top. This means that small animals ie little dogs & foxes etc can't get through. It's what I have round my own garden boundaries along the post & rail and also the hedges.
I took a day off yesterday, so catching up with all your brilliant ideas and experiences today, so thanks for keeping on the subject whilst I enjoyed a perfect family day.
That fence looks perfect Gardeners Boy and I will keep that in mind when we contact the "experts", it is a job for someone who knows what they are doing. I like the idea of the smaller squares to keep the small dogs and cats out (not much change of the cats staying away) as much a possible. The developers are going to make an earth bank, but this won't keep determined dogs or children out of our field & we feel a fence will more clearly define the official boundary.
I will have to see what is available over here - the cost of the freight is always a problem so we have to go with what is already in the hardware store, which in all fairness usually gives it's customers a good deal. The asbestos shed has now been demolished and the digger is levelling the soil before starting on the foundations. We feel it is a real eyesore and wish we had planted trees years ago when we first purchased the field. Luckily we have a lovely big garden too, which isn't visible in this picture.
