@Lizzie27,..yours has a fantastic show of blooms and it shows that this is the time it blooms in abundance,..as for the difference in tone i think its just the particular plant,..there are some very creamy blooms with hardly any freckles and some with so many freckles they meet and make the bloom almost without a freckle,..also some have four petals,..others have five,..this makes me think its not the difference in soil and feeding/watering,..just how the plant was bred.
Mine took 3 years or so to get going properly, after which they took off. This is one growing through a fairly wild section of trellis, also covered in ivy, grape vine and forsythia and is where the birds hang out waiting their turn on the feeders.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
You may well be right Philip. I also think the hot summer might have helped as this is the best it's been yet. BobtheGardener - Yours is lovely too and I like the variety of climbers you've got.
I may have to severely prune mine next year if we have to replace the fence though.
@BobTheGardener,..very nice,..great place to have it growing as well,..i didn't have anything established for mine to get a grip on so i had to erect some heavy duty plastic fencing and nail it to a high wall.
@Rubytoo,..has a point about the photography and light levels,.. plus the plant in a darker position when capturing an image of the bloom,..i use Macro when up close and not when the sun beams on the bloom this helps show up the tone.
@Obelixx,..@Gurnsey Donkey2,..keep looking after your Clematis Freckles and before you know it they will start climbing rapidly and produce lots of blooms.
@Lixxie27,..best of luck with yours if you have to cut it back in order to replace the fence,..it will re grow perhaps even better.
