    Sorry Silver Surfer, the seedpods looked like dried leaves on a sambucas to me. I expect you're right though, I don't grow weigela but might try it next year.

    Strongly resembles some kind of hybrid Willow to me .
  • Thanks for all the replies! I’ll have to ask my friend if the buddleja looking one has flowers then hopefully we will know exactly what it is then! I think yes the second one will be weigelia it’s not fuzzy though just me taking a slightly out of focus picture! 😁
    If she gives it a prune now I assume both won’t have any flowers this spring?

    Could be Paul we are mostly guessing, not having the whole plant or scale and size of leaf.
    I was assuming the thick old stems in the background are also that plant, it looks buddleia-ish.
    Astrantia It will depend on what you friend cuts off. Even if it needs a lot cut off some stems will have some flowers dotted about.

    Tell your friend we said she is not allowed to cut it too much until we see it flower.... :D
