@wild edges "the new compulsary sprinkler system" That's in Wales only at the moment?
Yes just in Wales.
but you can chose to have them installed. It's not easy to retrofit sprinklers, but in new build house, it costs about £1500 for a domestic sprinkler system, as long as you have decent mains water pressure.

We have hardly any water pressure, we have our own pumping station but as it costs the water board, they only turn it on when it’s really needed, like this summer where people wanted to use their hose pipes, which made our pressure even less.

There is picture in the paper this morning of the mother and her 2 young children who died in a house fire at the weekend. It is absolutely heartbreaking.
Doesn't bear thinking about, does it? I know it sounds a horrible thing to say, but the father is in critical condition, and part of me hopes he doesn't make it. Can you imagine what that will do to him when he finds out? I know people who have been in a similar situation, and they struggled for the rest of their lives. I know it's devastating Purplerain, but as others have said, at least they were all out and no one was injured or killed. 'Things' and houses can be replaced.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Thanks @wild edges .... I didn't know alarms should be replaced every 10 years, and would not have thought about them no longer working optimally. Our are all mains ones which we put in when we built the house 17 years ago .... so now long overdue. We test them regularly and they all seem Ok, but not worth taking any risks so we'll get new ones asap.
Once again, thanks for raising this.
