bare root v containerised

pvcpvc Posts: 4
hi I was recently inspired by the latest gardening world episode  on small trees for the garden and decided on a rowan tree does anyone have any advice and experience on planting bare root  . The ground is all ready and prepared but do I wait to spring for a more mature and expensive tree becomes available in my local garden centres or buy a bare root and plant now any ideas would really appreciated

Bare root is far cheaper, but the biggest drawback when buying a tree, as opposed to hedging, is that you're at the mercy of the person who chooses it, rather than you being able to pick it yourself, unless you live near a nursery which does bareroot.
The only other issue is that , unless the weather/ground is suitable, you'll have to keep a bareroot tree heeled in somewhere - ie covered with some soil and kept damp until the ground's right for planting it.

Buying  a tree potted from a GC will always be dearer, but if you have a nursery near enough, that would be the best option if you want to go for a potted tree. The more mature a tree is, the more attention it will need to get it established.

    Hope that's a little help  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
