You are right Frank, they have to shop for things that used to be just outside the back door, etc. I think there is such pressure as well for everything to be perfect. We are sold this image of the perfect family Christmas,  and people feel they have failed if it doesn't turn out that way. Also Christmas stuff starts appearing in the shops before the kids go back to school, it's like "Here's the starting line, on your marks, get set, go". No wonder they look so stressed with "only" 12 days to go !

AnniD Outside influence by people selling stuff says it must be perfect, Families know things go wrong and we all laugh about it, "No good crying over spilt milk" as we say in the North.
A couple of years back at my Daughters we sat down to the main meal everything set out and we never start until all the cooks are sat. Pulling crackers laughing at the weak jokes and wondering what that weird metal toy could be as it was all served up, suddenly Grandson asks "where are the sprouts Mum" silence then still in the freezer do you want them frozen, big laugh but my only ever Christmas dinner without sprouts, a blip not a catastrophe. I got them next day when Daughter brought me left overs to fry up as we always did, she had cooked them especially for me, that is family not perfect but happy. I rest my case.
    Frank.
