I'm in the NW Pennines too, at over 1200ft and while a lot of my garden is very exposed and windy, I do have a damp/wet, shady woodland area and a couple of bamboos which are well behaved and look very happy. One is, I think, a Fargesia, though I rescued its parent from a rubbish heap, so never had a name. It is growing right on the edge of the stream and makes a dense clump of graceful small canes, just thick enough to use on small plants
There are clumping ones that don't run too fast, and you could relatively easily put a root barrier down for that space. Phyllostachys aurea might be a possibility, as it would show up well in that corner, but there are other colour choices and I am no bamboo expert!
Thank you again for your suggestions and kind remarks too. I will give the Phyllostachys aurea some serious consideration as the only other bamboo I have in the garden is much lower down (the black stem variety, also with root barrier).

Still remembering it needs to be deer proof, if they will eat Pampas I imagine anything is fair game.
