Feature Grasses for a Shaded Slope

  • Dare I suggest a bamboo?
I'm in the NW Pennines too, at over 1200ft and while a lot of my garden is very exposed and windy, I do have a damp/wet, shady woodland area and a couple of bamboos which are well behaved and look very happy. One is, I think, a Fargesia, though I rescued its parent from a rubbish heap, so never had a name. It is growing right on the edge of the stream and makes a dense clump of graceful small canes, just thick enough to use on small plants :)
There are clumping ones that don't run too fast, and you could relatively easily put a root barrier down for that space. Phyllostachys aurea might be a possibility, as it would show up well in that corner, but there are other colour choices and I am no bamboo expert!

I know it is not a helpful comment, no more suggestions, but the new photos really show off your garden, and another vote for..... It looks lovely.

Still remembering it needs to be deer proof, if they will eat Pampas I imagine anything is fair game.
  • Thank you again for your suggestions and kind remarks too. I will give the Phyllostachys aurea some serious consideration as the only other bamboo I have in the garden is much lower down (the black stem variety, also with root barrier).
