The question is.....

I just caught a very short section of a radio discussion yesterday so don't know who the interviewer was or the politician being questioned.
The subject was Brexit, which explains why I only caught a short section of the discussion. :)

The interviewer asked a question and the response from the politician was along the lines of "The real question is".  That was as far as they got before the interviewer interrupted and said "The real question is the one I just asked you.  Will you please answer that".

So rare to hear a politician actually being pulled up for trying to divert the conversation into something they want to discuss.

They're all extremely well versed in the 'b*llsh*tting my way through an interview' school of etiquette  :D
If I hear one more politician use the term 'getting on with the job' I may be arrested for breach of the peace....

It's like the weasel phrase "it is very clear". It's a sure sign that they have veered off on some daft tangent and the only thing that's clear is that question is deeply mired in slurry. "Clear" has become an Orwellian word - that means the exact opposite of what it's supposed to mean. The Ministry of Clarity would be put to work obscuring as much as possible.

‘I strongly believe’ as if that will magically turn fiction into fact. TB and the dodgy dossier.

"It turns out that" is also a way of magicking up facts without the need to back anything up.
