Cancelled Green Bin Collection!

I'm really annoyed as I've just found out our local Council has cancelled our fortnightly green bin collections from 2nd Dec to 2nd March - despite us paying upfront for a year!
Puts paid to my plan to slowly prune an old long hedge back over the winter months.
I realize they've got to make cuts but this is highway robbery.

That's a long time to wait Lizzie. Our council only stops green waste collections for 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year, which is fair enough. Maybe you should try asking for a refund, although l wouldn't hold my breath. Maybe you could contact your local paper and start a campaign ?

I too have a fortnightly green bin collection so I hope our council does not suspend collections here.
How would the council save money if YOU have actually paid for this service.I could understand if it was included in your council tax but you have paid for a service outside of that.

Ours do not collect compostables for three months in the Winter, but it is included in our rates. This year all the leaves are off, but not every year. I send the leaves on the front to the council as I consider they are likely contaminated by the main road we are on. Leaves on the back garden are dealt with here.

There's probably some small print saying a year doesn't include winter. This doesn't seem to be a problem with us since our council got access to a biomass power plant. They'll take as much green waste as they can get now. The roadside trees have never been so neatly trimmed :|
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • Our green bin collections are suspended from Mid December till 2nd week in February this year. The suspension used to be just over Christmas & new year but it's become longer each year.  They say they will take Christmas trees for recycling. They claim the green bins are not used by a lot of people at this time. They have also stopped our food waste collection recently, they say there are problems with the existing service but worryingly they are telling us to put food waste in the black bin so presumably it will go to landfill while they sort out the new service.

Same here.  No green bin collections from end of November to March (but they are not specific about whether that's the beginning or end of March).  At least we don't pay extra for it at the moment, although I won't be surprised if they start charging.

I don’t pay to have the waste taken away, I have compost heaps, but this is what our council says.  They charge £40.00. and supply four large bags and collect fortnightly.
Subscriptions run from 1 October 2018 - 30 September 2019. There are no collections over the festive period but we will collect Christmas Trees up to 7 feet tall during the following two weeks.”

Apparently the Council said they would either have to increase the price (it's currently £44 per bin) or they would have to suspend the service over the winter - and they're not collecting Xmas trees either this year. Presumably the cost doesn't cover the cost of collection.  I'm not sure what will happen to the workers though, re-deployed on winter clearing/gritting duties or laid off?
