Winter storing of Dahlias and Bergonias

  • Thanks. I have some variegated multicolour pelargoniums, which I bought whilst away and haven’t seen it in any GC so would like to keep it. I might just leave it wrapped in a newspaper in the attic that doesn’t freeze and report how this goes. I have already filled my allotted space indoors so it’s me vs plant at the point😀!

If you have a special one, make sure you take cuttings from it just in case.

  • Thanks for suggestion. Have taken a few cuttings. But My success with cuttings have been a bit hit and miss so using this as a back up.

Another question re storing dahlia tubers... I dug mine up last week, and some are very big (a couple of years old) and covered in soil. They are now drying in the shed, before I wrap them in newspaper and pack them up for the winter. Everything I read says to knock all the dirt off them. Just wondering if this is really necessary, considering they have mostly overwintered very will in the soil in the past...?

I aways knock all the soil off of them, there’s usually a few slugs, the odd vine weevil, they need to be removed, some people wash them to get them really clean, I don’t !

I never knock the soil off. I just butt them together and that's it. No drying, no covering. I find the soil stuck to them dries out slowly and there's enough to stop the tubers being exposed.
As with so much in gardening there are tons of different methods adopted by folk. What works for you  ,  is the right way.
I find some folk over-complicate things.( or maybe I'm just lazy ?)

Lazy,!!! You and me  both, I wouldn’t fancy cleaning up your lot of dahlias😀
I do get a lot of slugs though and like to clean them off, and the begonias get infested with vine weevil grubs, I hook them out with a meat skewer, having said that, I haven’t had any this year, maybe due to the heat, I don’t know, maybe just luck.
