  Hmm.  Tree id from leaves can be hard.

  Any other id's you are interested in can you please take a pic to show the leaves on a twig as well as close up pics...this will show whether they are opposite or alternate.
  

  Going by the bark and the leaves I would say Prunus sp. A cherry tree.

  Do go back in the spring to look for the flowers.

  I'm not sure about cherry. The leaf looks more like that of Southern Beech, Northofagus nervosa, Rauli.

  However, as Silversurfer says, leaf identification can be difficult with trees. It is an unusual leaf though.

  An additional poblem is that it is autumn...id features such as hairs and glands will no longer be obvious.

  Nothofagus nervosa is a possibility.

  Super trees ..I love them but rather rare outside of special gardens...which is why I never concidered it as a possibility.
