Honey fungus?

Is this honey fungus that has just appeared at the base of my privet? The hedge has started to die off this year - I had hoped it was due to the extreme weather... Do I really have to start digging out the entire 10 metre hedge? 😩😭

  • that's not honey fungus, brown roll rim maybe? its growing on the stump (i.e. dead wood)
honey fungus grows on living wood and kills the plant.
the privet looks very old and seriously congested, it might have needed a renovation prune a couple of years ago to rejuvenate it, but now it looks like its dying of old age, it might be a 'rip it out and start again' job

I would make a guess at a slightly past it's prime Armillaria ostoyae which is a type of honey fungus. I am however not entirely happy with that identification as the caps seem to lack any scaling, could be age/variation of it could be because it's something else. Try a mushroom identification forum/facebook group to get some more opinions. Honey fungus will quite happily grow on stumps and that is almost certainly not a brown roll rim as it lacks both the rolled rim and has a ring which a roll rim doesn't.

  • Thank you both for responding. Who am I kidding?! After extensive googling, it’s pretty clear that it is a kind of honey fungus. I’m so upset!
