Has anyone grown agapanthus from seed?

I've just noticed that the agapanthus seed pods that I left on have started to dry and split open, and there are black seeds inside.

Is it worth popping some in a pot to see if anything comes up? I don't have a greenhouse, or windowsill space to spare, so it would be a pot of gritty compost in a sheltered spot outside.

Yes but some years ago now so I can't remember where I kept the seed tray.  Probably the unheated greenhouse.   Worth a try tho it will take a while to get to flowering size.  You never know what you'll get tho.   Maybe an interesting new shade of blue?

No problem, as you say sheltered spot outside, Germinate in Spring. Don't be in too big a hurry to pot on the seedlings. Feed them in the original compost for a season before moving them on. Can be got to flower in 3 years.
  • I did it and I am by no means an expert. I just put them in a pot of multipurpose compost, left them to overwinter in a sheltered spot outside.  They are now a good sized plant after a few years but haven’t flowered yet. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for this year.  (They have been outside all this time).

Thanks all! It sounds reasonably promising, so maybe I'll give it a go.  It's a nice dark blue one but there are lighter ones not far away so it's anybody's guess what might turn up in the offspring. There are loads of seed so I might even bring some in to store for another time.

  • I have grown agapanthus from seed successfully. Wait until spring and keep potting on seedlings when they outgrow their pot. I haven't been on top of this as much as I would like, but the ones I have moved on are big plants and I had my first flower this year and it was unlike anything I have iMovie garden. I have about 7 different kinds.
Good luck. I love them. Queen mum is my favourite, although it is frost tender
