What should do with land under trees

  • You will have to make do with mostly spring flowers, but there are some things that will give you attractive leaves too.
Lamiums have been mentioned, and Epimediums and Arum Italicum and there are others too.
Pachysandra terminalis has shiny evergreen leaves that reflect any light there is and white flowers.
Vinca can be a thug, but the variegated Vinca minor is pretty and perhaps a bit less vigorous, though the variegated V.major would show up well at the back.
The creeping Dogwood, Cornus canadensis might be another possibility, though it is deciduous and its spread is described as 'indefinite'! It has white flowers and red berries in autumn.

Is that horse chestnut still going strong?  Lovely to have space for such a large tree.

Only obvious thing missing I can see is a big gate to keep the riff-raff out, and a nice bench to listen to the birds.

The garden does look a little absent, does the tree cast loads of shade right across the front?
