We get sparrow hawks in pretty regular, and they occasionally get a song bird, but our feeders are next to a nice spiney berberis bush, that's the safety net for the birds, at the moment goldfinches are in decline down to 6 or 7 as is regular for this time of year, from 42 a few months back, its the tits that are dominant now
I didn't know that about the size difference, you learn something new every day! A sparrowhawk got a pigeon in my neighbour's front garden a couple of weeks ago, so know l know what sex it was. Very efficient in it's disposal.
Can be a bit too exciting sometimes! My daughter was once almost hit in the face by one as it pursued a blackbird, which it killed about 10 foot away. Not a nice experience...
Apparently the nearby woodland Nature Reserve now has Goshawks. Haven't spotted one of them yet, but the ravens from there are now often seen around our tall garden trees.
A kestrel was hovering just outside the upstairs window yesterday, when I looked out. Not as rare, but still lovely to see

God, what would I give to have a sparrow hawk hunting in our garden! Would be so amazing.
