Waterlillies and Iris lawvigata snowdrift

We have a very small pond and we have submerged to waterlilies and the Japanese Iris snowdrift.

This was about four months ago, and they looked pretty good for awhile.

All plants seem to have less foliage now… and I’m not sure whether they just die back for the winter or whether I need to be doing something actively? Does anybody know?

I have put some slow release feed (in a stick feeder) into the waterlilies that are fully submerged - and the iris is only just submerged, with the top of the pot just about level with the water.

    Water Lilies die back,
    I've never grown Iris laevigata

  • Our water lilies are dying back now - that is normal.  The trick is to catch the dying leaves before they fall into the pond and cause a sludge, so when they are brown and soft - easy to remove without having to tug hard gently ease them off and out of the pond. I always check the underneath of the removed leaves as so often there are snails and other pond creatures attached to them.
  • the iris will also be shutting down for winter, it will start producing smaller, thicker leaves and the existing leaves will yellow and die off, you can then cut them off and leave the new leaves to overwinter
  • Mine are slowly dying back as well. They are miniature ones, so growing in a large pot filled with water.

I'm thinking of taking them in for the coldest time of the year, last winter they spent outdoor and I don't think they liked it so much, even though they are supposed to be fully hardy.
