What Plant Is This?

hi, my parents have this beautiful looking plant but we don’t know what it is. It didn’t come with an information tag, and we was wondering if anyone here knew? We’re not sure if we have to trim it for winter, or leave as it is.

any help would be appreciated.

thank you

    Hi Tristan :)

It's Thunbergia alata aka Black Eyed Susan.  It's a tender perennial so is usually grown from seed as an annual each year in the UK.

It may survive the winter if it can be kept in a frostfree place, but it grows so easily from seed that it's hardly worth the trouble of overwintering it.

Dove - I'm thinking of growing some for my hot border. Do you start them off inside in late winter/early spring?

  • I started mine off at the same time as I did the outdoor tomatoes and Morning Glories ... so it would have been early April.  If I had enough greenhouse space I'd probably start them a bit earlier.

  • That’s that’s wonrful, thank you for the response and advice.
  • Glad to help ... they're such cheerful little flowers aren't they? B)

Hopefully your parents can grow some from seed next year, Tristan. Cheaper than buying the plant too  :)
Thanks Dove - I thought it would be something like that. I can do some with the tomatoes next year, now that I have the little greenhouse   :)
