On Saturday I visited a friend and former colleague who, at the start of this academic year, moved to another university in order to be nearer her new husband.
Professionally, she's always used Williams as her surname, so when he visited her at work last week and introduced him by his Christian name as her husband, the staff addressed him as Dr Williams!
He was tickled pink but much too polite to let her correct them. (Not a "joke" but a true story)
On Saturday, while I was tidying up in the kitchen, I was listening to a request programme on the radio. Naturally, many of the calls were about mothers and Mother's Day.
Suddenly, a miserable sounding man phoned to say that as he had lost his mother, he didn't feel like celebrating and couldn't see why the celebration existed at all.
The presenter told him that very many people had lost their mothers but like to celebrate the day in MEMORY of their mothers.
My phone started ringing then, so I didn't hear how that little chat ended...
