Yes, she's sad but also sort of relieved, hoping that he'll receive the treatment he needs. He has always been "I'll do as I like" kind of person and never got on with his own sister or his neighbours, though from time to time he could be very pleasant. His mother told me that over the years, they had to move houses several times because of this; or neighbours got fed up and moved. Moreover, he never managed to hold down a job for long, though he has a degree in Computing and for a few months was head of IT in a large company but could not get on with the staff, so he had to go.
A few months ago, some new people moved next door to them. At once he started pestering them, so they ignored him. The more they ignored him, the angrier and more vindictive he became. Last week, it was my friend's birthday, so her daughter took her on a weekend break. On her return, she was shocked to see that he'd cut down a tree belonging to the neighbours and threw the branches into their garden. There was a horrendous scene which ended with his sectioning.
I had her here for many hours and I think talking to me made her feel better. All I did was listen and provide some food but she was grateful because, as she put it, it's not easy to talk to people about mental illness; they always try to change the subject.
I feel I need a short break too though it's difficult for the rest of the family just now. Still, something to look forward to. Right now I must water all my flower pots....
I have had this cactus for a few years and always remembered to take it indoors in October in order to keep it dry till March. Somehow, I failed to do so last October and as it did not have its dry period, I felt certain there would be no flowers this year.
I was thrilled to see that a winter and spring out in the garden did it no harm. Its flowers are as wonderful as ever and, moreover, it is covered in many promising buds!

What beautiful flowers! Nature is so wonderful in her unpredictable ways! I think we have all been told that cacti need a dry spell. Here is evidence that disproves it!
I have a cactus that produces similar looking flowers. Unfortunately, in the past two years it hasn't been as prolific as in the past. I don't think it's got COVID but I'm certain it needs re-potting. Sadly its thorns are lethal, so I'm leaving it alone.

My cactus before COVID...
How are you and your friend? I imagine her son is still in hospital.
