They look like one of the shrubby Salvias. Could be a Gregii or Microphylla.

It could be salvia "Royal Bumble".
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Looks like my Salvia Coccinea.. but there are several red ones so could be any.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

Thanks very much everyone for all your responses. Looking at the photos we can find online we think it’s Salvia Royal Bumble.
Thanks very much again - we’ve spent the last few years wondering what it is!
