pot bound honeysuckle - roots grown into ground!

Hi! I have a pot bound honeysuckle - roots have broken open the pot and grown into the ground. I want to replant it into a much larger large pot and have removed the broken parts of it, but wondered if i will do it too much damage by simply cutting off the roots at the base of the rootball. Should i dig out the extra roots now in soil and try to incorporate them into the new planter? Many thanks for any advice (i am a gardening newbie)

You can cut the roots out and re-pot, that is fine. Don't worry about the excess roots that have now grown into your areas. Honeysuckles are best grown in the ground. What you will find is a repeat of this very soon. As long as you are aware your plant will never grow too big, it's fine, but in the summer time, you will need to do more watering than if you grew them into the ground.
  • Thanks Borderline, that's really helpful :)
  • Borderline is quite right. Honeysuckles are much better in the ground. They are large plants, 20ft or more when growing wild in the woods and hedgerows. As gardeners we should try to replicate their native habits and let them achieve their natural growth without the restrictions of being in a container.

  • Thanks for your reply. I have already repotted it now but will bear your advice in mind for the future
