I agree with Paul B3. It's a Pittosporum. I had a large one about 10 years ago, but it was unfortunately killed by the harsh Winter frost and ice. Being evergreen, shelter is essential. Was yours a victim of strong wind? If so is it the right tree for the location if you intend to replace like for like?
A gardener's work is never at an end - (John Evelyn 1620-1706)
These are not expensive to buy usually, so easy enough if you want to replace, but you could probably retrieve that plant if you wanted to try... if you can get it back upright, firm it back in, then you could cut it right down to about a foot above the ground, cut the whole lot off... it resprouts from old wood, and would likely grow back again.. by next Spring... easy to protect over winter with fleece or something in the meantime, but these are hardy plants here... but not totally wind hardy unfortunately..
Thanks for your help. Yes the tree had blown over from the strong winds however it has previously been propped back up by the gardener before me and as it fell over again I thought best to take it out. I didn't think about cutting it off and replanting so I will remember that next time. Thanks
