Thank you Marran,... and for looking in here at my roses...

  • Very informative thread, I've taken copious notes. Any opinions on the Kordes rose 'Westerland' (advertised as fragant, long-flowering, healthy, which incidentally is apricoty, @Lizzie27)?

I have a Westerland in my garden - only planted last year, so it is still establishing. All they say in their description is true: wonderful fragrance, beautiful flowers (even on such a young plant this hot summer there were quite a few), so far no problems with any pest or diseases. Based on my short experience so far - would definitely recommend.

If you like 'Westerland' but find the colour a bit too strong, then I recommend looking at 'Autumn Sunset'... it's the same rose but in a different colour, more amber yellow... it's a brilliant rose in its own right by all accounts I've read...   I don't have it myself at this time..

Just planted my "Silver Jubilee" rose which arrived today - fingers crossed, it's the right shade for its location!
I've got the "Penelope" you mentioned Marlorena, I love it. Flowers abundantly on a wall + fence and the hips (if you don't deadhead late in the season) are a lovely peachy colour all winter. It was a recommendation from Helen Yemm in the Telegraph.

I hope 'Silver Jubilee' does well for you, can't see why not... I had it a long time ago, and liked it very much at the time...
Delighted you have 'Penelope'... I wish I had the room for it..

I've long wanted "Buff Beauty" but just don't have the room - unless I can persuade OH to cut down 3 old cherry trees past their best. Trouble is I/we would then have to dig out the roots (past experience says a huge effort) and improve the soil a lot. I'm not sure I want to do that much hard work anymore.
