Clean out thy bird boxes

Is it normal for a bird box to get wet inside?

Fairly normal and the design of the box should have drainage holes. In this weather water gets in everywhere but hopefully during nesting season it won't be as wet. Make sure the hole doesn't face into the prevailing wind and if there's any obvious causes of excessive water getting inside from elsewhere then now is the time to tackle it.

I've done my first round of box clear-outs now and it's been a much more positive year. No dead chicks and every box has been used. There were two nuthatch nests, two bumblebee nests and five tit nests so far. I've still got 10 or so still to check and clean if this rain ever ends.

I did pick up a few flea bites though so just a word of warning there.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
