Compost in pots

It’s me again!
we have been growing tomato plants in plastic pots. What shall we do with the compost?
throw it away or is it good to keep for next year?

The fertiliser will be exhausted so it's no good for growing next year's plants in, but it still has organic matter so spread it on a border where it'll do some good.

I do exactly as Jenny says. It's put on borders, or used as a base in big pots before they get new stuff put on top.

I sift my old compost to get out all the roots etc and then sprinkle it over my lawn!

I use mine to grow Spring bulbs in pots. Just add a handful of fertiliser in Spring to help the bulbs plump up for next year.
  • We either spread it on a bare patch in the vegetable beds or put it onto the compost heap, either way it is used again.

Lots of uses then!  I have used old tomato compost to topdress the lawn, but I didn't sift it (too lazy for that!) - I just spread it around with a broom and then swept off the rooty bits.   Putting it in the bottom of big containers for bedding plants or anything else shallow-rooted is a good idea too - I'll use that one sometime.

  • Thank you everybody. I have just emptied the pots and scatter the compost on flowerbeds.
