I need to cull my gunnera as well. I have tinctorial. But how to do it? that is the question. Is it a pick axe job? Or do I take the axe to it? Help!
The stems are fleshy and slice through very easily, the rootstock is a different matter!
Cut them back hard, but please don't destroy them just because the Nanny State says we shouldn't grow them.. just cut the flower spikes off before they mature and enjoy the leaves!
I'm not destroying them. All I want is to decrease their size a bit. The plant has been in the ground for about 10 years and has well outgrown it's situation - so I need to chop it back a bit. But the growing point is rock hard. No way would I be able to dig that out - that is why I suggested I may have to take an axe to it.

I removed a "side shoot" from one of mine last year. The "stem" was over 6" in diameter and was just about as heavy as I could actually lift. I'm aiming to move more of it next Spring and move it down to the lake.
