Need help choosing Magnolia tree

uhja0uhja0 Posts: 2

Hi everyone, first time using a forum

I'm new to gardening and need help picking a magnolia tree to plant in my garden.

    I'm looking for these qualities:

  • beautiful blooms
  • long lasting blooms
  • tree doesn't grow too big

Does anyone one know any varieties that would be ideal for my garden?

Thank you in advance

  • Hmm!
I love Magnolia  and used to grow many sp and named cultivars.
    That is a hard question.
What colour flowers do you want..white, pink, red yellow?
Large  goblet flowers with just a few petals or daintier multipetal ones?
They can all grow fairly large over time.

May I suggest you get an old book.
Magnolia by expert Graham Rankin..it is very cheap on Amazon.

Masses of pics and good advice.
One of my favourites is Magnolia stellata Keiskei.

    What size is your garden?
Some do grow big but may take a number of years to do so.

I have Magnolia stellata in a pot so it has been restricted somewhat, but is still a slow small one recommended for smaller gardens.
There is one in a front garden nearby that has bee there 20 odd years, seven feet high and about four or five wide. It may have been pruned but looks quite nice and natural.
White scented flowers, and beautiful. Deciduous.
There are some newer cultivars one of which i know is pink.

I like the Stellata Magnolia types, there are a number of nice looking varieties, but I've only ever had a soulangeana type, and I prefer that tulip shape.. these are the large growers you often see in people's small front gardens planted many years ago..

If you want to contact a nursery, I recommend Junker's of Milverton Somerset... they have a huge range of mail order Magnolias, they are experts in the field, other trees too...  they can recommend to you any type you like, for your soil conditions and area,  speed of growth etc....  I have no connection with them I should emphasise...

I love my magnolia stellata (in the ground and about 12 or more years old). It has beautiful white star like flowers in the Spring and even the odd one or two in the summer, but it does lose it's leaves in winter (deciduous). It is a slow grower and usually does not need pruning. It's probably about 8ft high now x about 5 ft wide - the birds love it.

I have Magnolia liliiflora x stellata 'Jane' ; nice reddish purple 'goblet' shaped flowers .

I keep to around 3m high with a judicious biennial pruning . No pests , no diseases and no problem !
