Salvia Love and Wishes.

Hi,

I just got 3 Salvia Love and Whishes in 9cm pots. I've potted them on, will they be ok to leave out over winter?

Thanks

Fred.

I think they will die outside. If you can, a frost free place, on the cool side but not freezing. If you keep them just damp, they will then survive a winter. Outside with wet feet, they will most likely die.

They are a tender type of salvia, and as fidgetbones says, cold and wet will kill them. Have you got somewhere you could move them to for protection, a coldframe for instance ?

I think that's a borderline-hardy one.  RHS says H3, hardy in coastal and relatively mild parts of the UK, so it depends where you are. As they are new young plants, they might be more sensitive than older ones.
If you live in a colder area and don't have a greenhouse, cold frame or a shed with some daylight, move them to a sheltered spot such as up against the house wall, and maybe be prepared to cover them at nights if it's forecast really cold (horticultural fleece is ideal but I've used old net curtains, sheets of newspaper, even cardboard boxes up-ended over plants).  Try to keep the roots on the dry side over winter.  If outside, it's a good idea to stand the pots on pot feet, bricks or anything to lift them a bit off the ground so they can drain freely.

@WonkyWomble had S. Wendy's Wish which is from the same group as Love & Wishes, and she lost it over winter in her very sheltered town-centred garden a couple of years ago.  I'd put them somewhere sheltered cold greenhouse, coldframe etc. if I were you.

    Good luck ... they're lovely plants.  :)

  • Ok, thank you all for your help.

I had a lovely S. 'Wendy's Wish' which did not survive its fist winter (in Central Brittany, France). They hate being cold and wet, as mentioned by previous posters.
  • Thank you.
