Think they are liverwort and moss  :)

Yes, I get those from time to time on pots.  Carefully tip out the plant, scrape them off and add a bit of fresh compost to cover any roots that are left exposed.  Top dressing with some grit or gravel helps to stop them but I don't always get around to doing it......
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • The appearance of liverwort usually indicates poor drainage so I would remove the plant from the pot, check the hole(s) in the bottom are clear then repot it, removing the moss and liverwort as you do so.  If it's an acid-lover (looks a bit like rhodo family) then remember to use ericaceous compost, adding some grit to improve drainage.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

I agree with Bob ... and I'd add, when repotted don't stand it in a saucer over winter ... raise it up on a couple of bricks (keeping the draininge hole/s clear) to ensure that the drainage is 'free flowing' in periods of heavy rain etc.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thank you all. Pot and compost changed. Till next spring.

    happy gardening to us all.
