Is this a dog rose ? What is this?

hey guys was wondering if you could give me some kind of idea what this very spiky shrub starting to look like it needs cutting back now

    Yes, very likely R. canina.

    I'd say it's Rosa rugosa actually...

    It's Rosa Rugosa I would say I don't know if you should cut it back or not as mine are windbreaks/weeds that I use the lawnmower on!

    I  cut mine right back to the ground at the start of Spring, it grows up well again, I didn’t even plant it here but it’s everywhere,  made a hedge on its own practically,  I think must be spread by birds. 
    Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

    thanks guy just had a closer look and from what you both said it does certainly look like rosa rugosa thank for you both your help appreciated
