Instead of burning pernicious weed roots on a bonfire, has anyone tried a smaller-scale approach?

I pay council tax too @Fairygirl but would be expected to pay another £3 a month for a green bin collection. That's what you get for living in the Royal Borough - that and green wellies  ;)
I pay Council Tax and an extra £60 a year for a garden waste bin.
    £3 a month would be a bargain!!!
I have no transport or place for a compost bin so I have to pay up  :|

Here our bin collection is not covered in the house tax, we get 7 bags/items of recycling picked up each month (if you call in advance to book it) which can be garden rubbish if you wish. But a 110L bin is collected weekly for £250 a year, you can get a larger or smaller bin if you want for less/more money.

Up until last year we got garden waste collected in sacks which we purchased for £1.30 each. When you wanted bags collected you phoned the council to say how many you had and they would pick up on rubbish day.
I always thought this was a good scheme as it catered for everyone, from the person who had 1 sack in a blue moon, many sacks in some seasons and then nothing for months, people with no transport to get to the tip etc.
The council said that the £1.30 did not cover the cost of £1.95 to collect.
Why not just put up the price to cover the cost to maybe £2.50?
Instead we now have to pay a year in advance for bins which are a pain to store for some,my daughter for instance has a large rear garden but entry is only through the house,so bins are stored on the pavement outside.
Large bins are great for some but does not suit all,I think there should be a range of options available to suit different gardeners needs.
