sweet peas

we planted sweet pea seeds couple of weeks ago which have now reached about 7" in height. Have now put these in individual pots into small plastic 'greenhouse' but will they survive over winter?
Any advice appreciated.

  • I did mine last night on the advice of Monty Don GW. I have done this before and they survived OK in my green house. Which is heated only when the temp drops below -4 just in case. But at times I have forgotten to switch it on and they have been fine.

Sweet peas are actually very hardy and would even survive outside (I sometimes sow them direct in the ground in early October and they're fine) ... but they're probably safer from weather and mollusc damage in a cold greenhouse or coldframe.

I would now pinch out the tips to promote some side shoots.

Sound advice as usual from Dove.
My first lot are in a cold greenhouse, and i will sow further lots in January and March, in order to get a succession of flowers.

It's rough weather [wind, rain, hail etc] and slug/snail damage that are the main issues over winter if outside, dandm. Under cover in the little growhouse will protect them from that. It's all they need.  Pinch out regularly if you have a lot of growth over aoutumn and winter too, as said, and remember to give them a bit of time to acclimatise again once you start bringing them out next year.

Just make sure the growhouse stays in place though  ;)
