The one thing I try to bear in mind when buying seeds, if I'm looking at Mediterranean type varieties, is that they will have been developed in areas with longer warmer growing periods so I try to choose ones that are described as being 'Early' to allow for our shorter growing season.
That being said, the best courgettes I've ever grown are the Italian Romanesco type I grew this year ... they loved this summer ... hopefully they'll love whatever sort of summer we get next year .........
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I source my seeds from all over. Wilkes etc or a proper seed catalogue if I want something more unusual. Bargain bins are great just check the sow by date on the bottom of the packet. Even out of date seeds maybe viable do a test sowing on damp kitchen paper to see if they will germinate. For organic seeds you can beat Tamar Organics. For heritage seeds contact Garden Organic at Ryton. My own seed is kept in labelled envelopes inside a plastic box with tight fitting lid in my fridge over winter.
