Black patches on earth in lawn (grass unaffected)

    had a thought? what about ants? they can deposit a little pile of soil at their entrance/exit holes?

    I don't think there is a correlation between the black 'marks' and the areas lacking growth. Looks like two separate issues to me. The barer patches look like they could be leatherjacket damage.
  • The bare patches are just through lack of water.

    The pictures were taken about a month or so ago. There's no growth, just healthy grass with dark patches on the ground underneath. No bumps or evidence of antactivity 

    are another picture.
