Thompson and Morgan

I ordered 6 fritillaria imperialis 3 red and 3 yellow they came in 2 clear bags ventilated they arrived 17th August I opened up bags to plant 20th October (yesterday ) one in each bag was rotten, the other 4 had developed roots and were healthy the rotten ones had no roots, contacted Thompson and Morgan they say its been 28 days since they were delivered so nothing they could do, I am very disappointed as pictures show these were well rotten

Most bulbs are sent out at the right time of year for planting. Most ordinary gardeners do not have the right sort of conditions for storing them without rot setting in even in a ventilated plastic bag changing temperatures and moisture in the atmosphere will cause condensation and rot.
    Afraid they’ve had it and it wasn’t T&Ms fault ... sorry  :(

  • I stored all my bulbs the same way alliums , tulips,, daffodils, anemones, and a lot more and none have gone rotten.

But they will say they were fine when they sent them out and there’s nothing you can do to prove that they weren’t. If I understand you correctly you didn’t even open the bags and inspect them ... and as I said you will have stored them in less than ideal conditions.
They will have been in dry chilled containers at the producer’s storage. Once they were taken out of those conditions they become susceptible to condensation and rot and would have been best planted on receipt.

2 months in a plastic bag would be detrimental to most bulbs.
  • I would like to mention that today I received a pack of new bulbs of Thompson and Morgan , very good customer service from a member of there staff .
