Bonsai tree

Rich BRich B Posts: 132
Hi.
I want to add a good looking bonsai to my driveway. I have a 750mm cubed planter in which I plan to put the bonsai inc it's small pot, and plant low level around. I think it will look great.
The tree will be in full shade close to house.. I want ever green and I am happy to repot in time to get a big bonsai. 500-750mm tall/wide.
Any thoughts on type and other expertise welcome.
I live in deal kent

A real bonsai tree would take hundreds of years to get to that size .......... what about a cloud pruned evergreen .... more like the ones on this site https://www.paramountplants.co.uk/blog/index.php/cloud-pruned-trees/

Bonsai are very expensive and require specialist care to keep looking good.  I rather suspect one perched in your front garden will be eminently stealable too.

Go for a well shaped Japanese maple  - some have colourful bark for winter interest - or an evergreen shrub you can cloud prune to show off its "bones".

What about an olive ... very expensive ... but if I've got it correct your 'name' indicates that you're a rich b.....  ;) so that may not be an issue for you ........

I think it could give you the aesthetic you're looking for.

    Sorry if I've misunderstood  :)

LOL..Im called Rich B because my first name is Richard and my surname begins with B....Not because im loaded...I wish..Thats hilarious....
Olive is almost perfect but far to big and expensive. It is going to be 75cm off the ground as thats the size of the planter, another 75cms is ample, thats why i want miniature. Iv had some good luck as a new-ish gardener and im happy to learn about a new plant so like the idea of training and pruning and im not to worried about theft around here.
Bonsai is what i want so its getting the right one im interested in..

Ah well .... that's ruined the image I had of you duh! :(   .... maybe your parents had a sense of humour lol   ;)  .... or maybe your time has yet to come .... crossed   if so, remember who tried to help you with your garden questions  o:)

Hmmmm trying to think of something that will give you the look you want that isn't going to cost a fortune ..............

  • How about Ivy?
Not the trailing stems, but the mature ones which grow upright with a woody stem and bear the flowers? I have read that if you take a cutting from these they will continue to grow upright. Ivy roots easily, grows fast, is evergreen and can develop quite a trunk, plus it will take hard pruning without sulking. Could be the perfect plant for you to try out your training on and less likely to get nicked!

Parents had a sense of humour?
My middle name is Edward...Hows that for a sense of humour :D:D:D Fortunately there were 3 other Dicks in my year..
Keep thinking, as all good advise is good advise.
I will have a look at the Ivy . Thanks any way
