Magnolia fruit / seeds / pods

    So this has come from my Magnolia tree... never seen one in all the previous years... At 1st I thought it was some kind of Tropical Lizard / Frog.... Any feedback much appreciated.... Obviously, I suspect seeds but the colour ....????

    Yes, magnolia seed pod with about 3 potentially viable seeds by the looks of it.  The swollen ones are those which had successful pollination.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    To get the seeds to germinate, you need to soak them overnight in warm water to remove the soapy covering.

    No heat required. Just watch out for rodents, they love the seeds.

    Berghill, you are a treasure.  There's a row of gorgeous magnolias at the community hall where I go for patchwrork on Mondays and I've been wondering about gathering up some seeds and seeing if I can get anything to grow.  I know it wlill take a long time to get a flowering size tree but nothing ventured and all that.

    The one I grew from seed got to about 3 feet tall before I managed to kill it, or I should say, extreme drought killed it. Grew about 3 inches a year if my memory serves me right.

    Someone has cleaned them all up!  Plan B then.  Keep an eye out for more seeds elsewhere.
