And a good pair of gloves - riggers gloves will do the job and are quite cheap - if you have largish hands. They are tough as anything. I have medium sized hands and they lasted me for years when I was taming my garden. You don't want to get blisters when you are doing a lot of digging.
Can I add on to my list - a good trowel (with a bit of brightly coloured insulating tape round the handle so you can find it!) and a cheap rake. You will only really need the rake at this point so just get the cheapest you can get.
Although stainless steel spade and fork are the best, if you are short of money just buy the ordinary ones at around half the price. They will last just as long although not not as nice to use.

And one further point - look after your tools - always put them away under cover at night. They will last you for years to come.

Now is the perfect time to buy garden tools - most places have them in their sale - Wickes have got most of them at half price so you can get spade, fork, rake, secateurs, shears & loppers all for under £50 in total - bargain.
