Are these definately  chestnuts?

The reason I ask is  the "chestnuts" are very soft when they come out of the prickly shells. They are always a small size - every year.

When I've seen chestnuts in the supermarkets  they are never soft, and they are always bigger than these.

Could these be something else other than chestnuts?

Yes, those are chestnuts ... usually only one from each cluster is worth using ... the others are usually soft and hollow.   If they're all dry and useless it may well be because of the drought,

  • Not sure about dry. They feel sort of spongy, which is the same every year.

Every one is about the same size.
