What vegetable seeds can be planted outside now?

    Broad beans ... use one of the hardier varieties ... I use Aquadulce 'Claudia'.

    Would garlic grow in a potato bag? I grew spring onions earlier this year in them and wondered if the cold would penetrate the soil over winter @raisingirl. Also are they greedy feeders.

    I've not tried it @purplerallim, but I would think it's worth a try. They aren't especially greedy, no, quite happy growing in low fertility soil alongside carrots. They need a reasonably steady water supply - especially in spring when the bulbs are swelling - and they positively need cold, so I doubt frost will be a problem to them as long as they aren't waterlogged.

    The 'garlic farm' website has some advice on growing it in pots - they say minimum 6 inches depth of soil, so a potato bag would be fine.

    Just make sure they don't get deep frozen.   Every time I tried in my last garden all the garlic was frozen to a mush tho red onion sets did fine.   In this new garden I had a fantastic crop of garlic this year but red onions were not so good so I'm trying white onions from sets and will be sowing pink onions in modules early next year to plant out next spring.

    i'm about to plant plugs of cauli, Savoy and Pointy cabbage  but will let OH plant his dreaded Brussels plugs.  He has black thumbs so figers crossed only one of them actualy grows.  I don't like the taste and don't even like teh smell when he picks, prepares and cooks his portion.

    I've just been out there in the garden and have sown two double rows of my broad beans ... it's lovely out there, so sunny and warm ... and I'm looking forward to the end of May when we'll be having lovely tender broad beans and parsley sauce hungry

    I too have been outside this morning weeding. ITS BITTERLY COLD OUT THERE!!! Wish I was with you @Dovefromabove couldn't feel my fingers when I finished. A chilly 10° with little sun. 🧣🧤🙁

    19C here and will get a bit warmer.  I went out to rake the bed for the plug veggies and ended up watering dahlias which sudenly have mildew, fartichokes which were wilting and sweet potato vines which, onder of wonders, have big fat tubers showing.   We'll have one or two of those roast for dinner tonight along with steamed fresh cabbage.   

    I also needed  to water the peppers and toms still ripening in the PT so ended up not planting anything before lunch.   Just having a mug of decaf before I go back out to play and plant.
