Cuttings

I have 4 really nice pyrocanthas and 2 philadelphus belle etoile I want to propagate! When's best to take cuttings and any fool proof techniques to maximise results?

Re the pyracantha,  l have taken cuttings at this time of year and even into middle of November and kept them in a coldframe and in pots kept by the house wall. Semi ripe wood about 4 to 6 inches long and I use quite a gritty compost. Hope this is of some help  :)

If you have any thin stems than can be bent down or off the base with Pyracantha you can also peg it down and layer it. I did one experimentally last year and it took. Wounded the stem under a leaf joint, big stone on it , then tied the rest upright to a cane.
     I never tried cuttings yet.
@AnniD Are they quick and easy to root? (Pyracantha).

Tbh @Rubytoo, I find them a bit mixed, and it doesn't seem to matter which variety it is. I take say 4 cuttings and 2 may take even though I treat them exactly the same ! Mind you, I suppose that applies to any cuttings really. They seem to take pretty quickly, within a month I'd say .

    Thanks AnniD, yes me too.
Richard you can also take hardwood cuttings of your Philadelphus now, they apparently don't root until spring, but at least you can try, it will be something to do. Rooting hormone can help, you can do them in the ground or in a pot. I looked it up as I didn't know what it looked like, very pretty, can see why you want more.
  • Thanks all I think I'll take cuttings off 2 of the pyrocanthas and layer the other 2 as an experiment, and I'll have a crack at hardwood philadelphus cuttings now ☺
