Ooh if I knew it was allowed, I would have said the neighbours cooking fat too...
Does Hosta get a quid? I didn't say that either. :|

slugs and snails - soul destroying when they eat a tray of seedlings you've worked so hard to get to that point

It's the things you can't control that drive you to despair, isn't it. I always battle slugs but this year has been the worst and most soul-destroying I have ever known. First the Beast from the East killed off a good many of my plants but then the drought, which was very severe here, decimated the garden. I have spent all summer watching things fail and die. Never ever felt so defeated!

@Posy, I always think of you whenever slugs are mentioned on the forum. Had hoped this season wouldn't be as bad for you. 😟

@diana 1. My method of quarantine is to keep new plants in a separate area for a bit before I plant them out in the garden. I usually buy smaller (cheaper😉) specimens in 9cm pots, so they are potted on to bulk up a bit first anyway. Possible pest problems would soon be spotted if they appear, the shelf is near the back door.
Touch wood, I've had no horrors so far👍.
  • Slugs and snails knocked back a lot because of the hot dry conditions.
Black  fly have been a pain but otherwise  ok. On allotment  have to net a lot of crops because  of pigeons pecking.

That's kind, Kitty. I'm getting on top of the slugs, I think! And rain has come at last. Still need a good week of it.

Posy. Your 'body count' from the 2016/17 seasons, nightly collection buckets being in triple figures, would make anyone despair.
I'm crossing my fingers that the heatwave has slowed down their reproduction rate for you.
It would be great news to hear that the bucket contained less than 100 slugs next year.
