Ornamental grasses

I've bought a load of stipa tunissima, stipa gigantea and pheasant tail grass and was wondering if it's to late to plant in October? Or should I wait till spring?

    I would plant them all
now while the soils still relatively warm.
Grasses hate being planted into cold soil ... and in the spring the soil will be cold.

Stipas will not enjoy being wet at their feet or too cold either - I lost all mine in my last garden and they included those 3 - so give them somewhere well drained and sheltered from serious cold.

  • It's quite sheltered and I'm adding grit and a lot of compost and rotted manure so fingers crossed. I live in Swansea, south wales so quite mild for a while

That should be OK then.  It was a wet December and then -25C in Jan that finished ours off in rural central Belgium.

No.  It's usually dry and sunny when that happens so you rug up and take the dogs for long walkies.  Not so good for plants tho cos there's usually no snow for insulation.
