Seedlings- propagator or open?

Dirty HarryDirty Harry Posts: 1,048
Got some foxglove seedlings to prick out, they all germinated in the conservatory but I've since got a heated propagator.

Would there be any benefit or harm from putting them in the propagator once I prick them out? I know too much moisture can be an issue but there are 2 vents on the propagator lid that can be opened and closed.

If the lid on isn't a good idea, would at least having them on the propagator base be worthwhile to keep the soil temperature more suitable?

Once seeds have germinated they don't need to be in a heated propagator ... especially not foxgloves ... the last thing they need is warm soil.  Prick them out and put them in a coldframe outside.

So warm (18 celsius) soil is actually bad for them?

Think about how they grow out in nature ...  out there in the garden, self seeding and springing up all around the place.

If the soil is warm they'll grow soft and etiolated (drawn out too tall and floppy).  They're a native plant, or they're a variety derived from our native plants, and need as close to 'natural' conditions as possible.
