Sloes on a blackthorn bush - Prunus spinosa ... it's been a brilliant year for them ... perfect for making sloe gin.

Would you like some of mine Dove?
I have no use for them unless my sister comes over and takes them  ;)

The locals here make a drink called Trouspinette in spring, using the tender new shoots of blackthorn (spinette) to flavour red or white wine mixed with eau de vie, sugar and vanilla.  They serve it as an apéro - http://www.equinoxe79.com/la-trouspinette-de-vendee-pines-noires.html

Very tasty but not for drivers.

@Obelixx, My father in law used to make "troussepinette" and insist on serving it for appéritif. Disgusting stuff. ;)

It can certainly be too sweet but some of the ladies at patchwork bring their own versions for apéro when we have our monthly full day meeting.  One uses less sugar but also lemon or orange or grapefruit zest instead of vanilla and that's really good.

Our farmer neighbour makes red, white and pink Pinauds.  Lethal.  Fortunately we walk there.
