Unless you live somewhere very warm, @Favour, I'd leave seeding your lawn until March or April. If you do it too early, you'll just be feeding every sparrow in town... best to wait until weeds are germinating in the garden, then you know the soil is warm enough.

Ensure that you don’t have any area of the lawn in very deep shade with overhanging shrubs/trees. This is the main cause of moss effecting a lawns is lack of natural light and constant dampness. Start work in early spring Apply weed, feed and moss killer in spring Scarily the lawn with a metal open lawn rake to remove moss and other debri Get air in to the sub soil by forking the lawn or use a hollow tine fork that will remove soil and leave holes for top dress mixture Top dress with a mixture of top soil, Hort grit and sand and sweep it in to holes to create open drainage and air pockets Re-seed with grass seed that will suit your lawn environment Water in well and keep on watering each day if necessary to keep the re-seeded area moist
