rambling rose not rambling

Hi, I have a rambling rose (I don't know the name) which has been in the ground for about 1,5 years. I've trained the main stem carefully along the pole of the pergola, but it just keeps on making sideshoots. The main stem won't go up :) I remember from a previous one I planted years ago the it shot up, so I assumed this would do the same :) Help much appreciated!

I think roses need a couple of years to settle before they grow properly and a lot depends on variety too.   I advise patience for at least another year.   Unless I'm mistaken, the side shoots are what produce the flowers so you should get a good display next year.

  • Thanks Obelixx! I will leave it be for the time being :) That usually does the trick for most plants I've noticed.
